Aim of the project – to work out original programme for integrated learning of the Latvian language and Latvian culture canon “Welcome to Latvian Culture Canon”. The execution of the programme will provide an opportunity for ethnic minorities and non-citizens of the town and region of Daugavpils to improve their proficiency of Latvian and gain knowledge of Latvian culture canon – the totality of the most outstanding and significant works of art and culture values reflecting the major achievements of the nation in culture.
Project target group – residents of ethnic minorities and non-citizens (80 people) in Daugavpils – both in the region and town with the largest ratio of ethnic minority residents
and limited environment of using Latvian language.
Major activities – to organize integrated courses (80 hours) of Latvian language and Latvian culture canon, to create a set of teaching materials for the programme implementation based on the principles of wholeness and the unity of theoretical and practical action and demonstrativeness and course of Latvian history. For the practical application of the knowledge acquired in the courses, to create a” Club of language users”; students of Daugavpils University Latvian philology and Latvian culture history will participate in its work, in order to build up the language proficiency of the project target group by discussing with them the culture canon values. To organize a learning tour for the course participants to get familiar with Latvian culture canon objects in direct experience.
Planned outcomes – acquisition of the Latvian language in interaction with the knowledge on 99 objects of architecture and design, cinema, literature, music, theatre, folk traditions, visual art characterizing Latvian culture that are included in Latvian culture canon; this will constitute the basis of the culture experience of the project target group providing support for versatile acquisition of the state language and culture and the development of a united understanding of history, thus fortifying the sense of belonging to Latvia, promoting tolerance and reducing national tension.

An original program for integrated apprehension of the Latvian culture and the Latvian language was developed and introduced within the project. During the implementation of the program representatives of ethnical minorities and non-citizens improved their skills in the use of the Latvian language and acquired knowledge about the Latvian Culture Canon. An integrated course in the Latvian language and the content of the Latvian Culture Canon was provided (80 lessons in total), and work sheets for the needs of the program were designed. The methodology of the project was based on the holistic theory - the belief of the unity of theoretical and practical activities and visuality. During the final stage of the project 15 non-citizens were given a 40-hour course in Latvian history and culture. For practical application of the knowledge acquired during the project the project team organized the “Language Users’ Club”, where 8 leaders conducted 9 lessons each, 72 hours in total. The students of the Daugavpils University study programs “Latvian Philology” and “History of Latvian Culture” gave 9 lessons each, and the new litterateurs from the “Literary Academy of Eastern Latvia” offered to the participants of the courses to gain creative writing skills in an interactive way and thus expand their vocabulary. Within the framework of the project, 2 field trips were organized with the aim to provide an opportunity for 80 course participants to study the objects of the Latvian Culture Canon onsite and apply the Latvian language knowledge acquired during the courses.
The project partner Daugavpils University that has an extensive experience of developing and introducing innovative study programs was involved in the implementation of the project. Within the framework of the project, highly qualified DU lecturers who have a wide experience in teaching Latvian to adults and a professional specialization in the history of Latvian culture and literature, developed and approbated an original program and designed work sheets for an integrated acquisition of the Latvian culture canon and the Latvian language. Consulting closely with the DU experts on cross-cultural relations they also elaborated methodological recommendations for the popularization of the Latvian Culture Canon. The project partner provided the leading project partner with students-volunteers who introduced the activities of the “Language Users’ Club” and at the same time gained their first experience in pedagogical work within their chosen specialization. The project partner offered charge free premises and technical equipment for the activities of the project.
